The Artist

Madhumita

She spent eight years as a consultant at ZS Associates, then left to work in clay. She opened this studio in Rakkar in August 2026.

Consulting

For eight years Madhumita was a technical and business consultant at ZS Associates. She was good at it, and was promoted twice. The painting never stopped; it just had the edges of the day.

Leaving

There was no walkout scene. She wanted more hours for making. Once she saw how small a corner the work had, she could not put it back.

Clay

She left the job without another one lined up, travelled, and put her hands on wet clay. The wheel made more sense than another spreadsheet. That was 2024.

How she learned

Six months at a residential pottery studio in the Kangra Valley, then volunteering there. A glaze-firing workshop with ceramicist Tinni Arora. Volunteer time in Kolkata studios. Then a year of daily practice on her own setup — collapsed bowls, crooked handles, plates that cracked. That is the work.

This studio

In August 2026 she opened Mita Pottery Studio on the first floor of Ghoomakkad, Rakkar. The Dhauladhars are outside the windows. She teaches every session. People who have never touched clay sit next to people who already throw.

  • The packaging was impressive—it’s just the same care wasn’t given to the actual piece. The glaze is disappointingly poor, and to make matters worse, it wasn’t even done in the glaze that was promised. Definitely not the smooth finish I was…
