1-Day Plan: Culture, Clay, and Sunset
Morning: Visit the Dalai Lama Temple Complex (Tsuglagkhang) in McLeod Ganj and wander the market. Midday: Drive down to Rakkar (about 40 minutes) for lunch, followed by an hour-long Sip & Paint session or a 2-hour clay workshop at Mita Pottery Studio. Late afternoon: Walk through Norbulingka Institute's Japanese-style gardens and artisan thangka workshops in Sidhpur. Sunset: Drive up to Naddi for the iconic Dhauladhar panorama.

3-Day Plan: The Classic Valley & Ridge
Day 1: Monasteries and Tibetan culture in McLeod Ganj and Bhagsunag waterfall. Day 2: The cultural south side of the valley — Gyuto Monastery chanting in the morning, an afternoon pottery session at Studio Mita in Rakkar, and tea in Sidhbari. Day 3: A day hike up toward Triund or a leisurely afternoon along the pine trails of Dharamkot and Naddi.
5-Day Plan: The Creative Explorer
Add a day trip to Andretta Pottery and the Norah Richards estate near Palampur (50 minutes from Rakkar), and dedicate an extra day to independent studio practice or quiet village walks along the Khanyara and Aghanjar Mahadev streams.
7-Day Plan: Full Immersion and Rest
Base yourself in a quiet village like Rakkar for the entire week. Spend 5 studio days working with clay at Studio Mita on a retreat or Practice Week package. Use alternating afternoons to walk, write, read, and explore the Kangra Valley without checking out of a room.
Where should you stay: McLeod Ganj, Dharamkot, or Rakkar?
McLeod Ganj is best if you want to be steps from Tibetan food, books, and the main temple. Dharamkot is best if you want trailheads, yoga cafés, and a younger backpacker scene. Rakkar is best if you want peaceful mountain living, birdsong, clean air, easy access to Norbulingka and Gyuto, and room to focus on creative work.

What it actually looks like
Not a brochure. Two clips from the studio’s own Instagram, shot on ordinary days. They play here without sound — tap either one for the whole thing, music and comments included.

Clay-covered hands, endless chatter, spontaneous pizza afternoons, little walks between making, and slow pottery while the monsoons roll in. No rush, no perfect schedule.

In a parallel universe I run a tiny pottery studio in the mountains. Life at the studio lately.

How many days are needed to visit Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj?
Three days is the sensible minimum to see the main sights without rushing. Five to seven days is ideal if you want to include creative workshops, day hikes, or a visit to nearby Palampur and Andretta.
Is it better to stay in Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, or Rakkar?
For quiet mountain living and craft, stay down in Rakkar or Sidhbari (15 min from Dharamshala town, 40 min from McLeod Ganj). For bustling street life, stay in McLeod Ganj. For hiking and trail cafés, choose upper Dharamkot.
How do I get between McLeod Ganj and Rakkar?
Local taxis make the 13 km trip in about 40 to 45 minutes down through Dharamshala town. Fares are standard local rates. You can also take a shared bus from Dharamshala bus stand toward Sidhbari.
Can I do a pottery class if I only have a weekend?
Yes. Weekend pottery workshops at Studio Mita run as two-hour blocks on Saturdays and Sundays. Pre-booking via WhatsApp is recommended as slots cap at six.
