Studio & village

A Pottery Studio in Rakkar, near Dharamshala

Mita Pottery Studio sits on Rakkar Road in a Gaddi village in the lower Kangra Valley — fifteen minutes from Dharamshala town, and a quieter side of the valley than McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot. Quieter, though, is no longer the same as cut off: there are five or six good cafes on the road, ten-minute deliveries into the village, and neighbours running sound and yoga workshops through the season. Terrace fields, slate roofs, and the Dhauladhar range in the studio windows.

Rakkar, not the tourist ridge

Most visitors go straight up to McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot. Rakkar sits above Sidhbari on the lower slopes: a lived-in Gaddi hamlet with mud-brick houses, terrace fields, and a road that still functions as a village street. The studio is on the first floor of Ghoomakkad. Homestays are in the same building. You can walk to a cafe after a session without getting in a taxi.

Where people eat, and where they sit around

Savado is on the road: sourdough sandwiches, vegan or with egg, and the best coffee in the village. Terracotta has the seating everyone ends up in, and the food is good. Shelly’s Backyard is newer and does Indian plates — it is the one people go to and then stay at. The Fat Teapot has books, cakes and dogs on the furniture; Aahaar does simple satvik food. Sidhbari bazaar is downhill for anything else, and Blinkit delivers to Rakkar in about ten minutes, which is worth knowing if you are here for three weeks rather than three days.

Walks, viewpoints, and neighbours

Village trails start at the door and run out through the terrace fields with the Dhauladhars standing behind them. Kharota Viewpoint is a short climb. Aghanjar Mahadev and the Indru Nag ridge are walks rather than drives; the streams toward Khanyara are where to go if you want water. Gyuto Monastery is about five minutes away in Sidhbari, and Norbulingka Institute about a five-minute drive, for thangka studios and gardens. Dharamshala town is 15–20 minutes. McLeod Ganj is about 40 minutes up the hill.

A village that makes things

The studio is not the only thing running here. Sound therapy and sound healing, yoga and meditation, art workshops — they come and go through the season, hosted by people who live in Rakkar rather than by us, and none of it runs to a schedule we can publish. That is genuinely the appeal: you can spend a week making pots in the morning and turn up to something different most afternoons, without a tour bus in sight. Ask on WhatsApp and we will tell you what is on the week you are here.

Madhumita teaches every session

There is no rotating junior roster. Weekend workshops run as two-hour blocks; monthly courses go into wheel throwing, trimming, and glazing. Groups stay small: six people at most, four at the wheel.

How to get to Rakkar

We are on the first floor of Ghoomakkad New Building, Rakkar Road, Rakkar, Himachal Pradesh 176057. From Dharamshala town, it is about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi (7 km). From McLeod Ganj, it is about 40 to 45 minutes (13 km down through town). From Gaggal Airport, it is about 30 minutes (15 km). Local taxis know Ghoomakkad on Rakkar Road; message us on WhatsApp and we will send a direct Google Maps pin.

What to expect from clay

First pieces are handmade by beginners — walls may be uneven, and firing or trimming can crack a piece. That honesty is part of the studio: you leave with a real object made by your hands, not a polished souvenir stamped out for tourists.

Frequently asked questions

Tap a question to open it.

What is there to do in Rakkar besides pottery?

Village trails through the terrace fields with the Dhauladhars behind them, Kharota Viewpoint, Aghanjar Mahadev and the Indru Nag ridge, and the streams toward Khanyara. Gyuto Monastery and Norbulingka Institute are both about five minutes away. Neighbours run sound healing, yoga, meditation and art workshops through the season, though not to a fixed schedule.

Can you get food and supplies in Rakkar?

Yes. Savado does sourdough sandwiches and coffee with vegan and egg options, Terracotta and Shelly’s Backyard both do full meals, and the Fat Teapot and Aahaar are on or just off the same road. Sidhbari bazaar is a few minutes downhill, and Blinkit delivers into the village in about ten minutes.

Is Rakkar a good base for solo travellers and couples?

It suits both. There is little traffic and few tourists, so it is calm enough to stay a few weeks, and there is enough on the road — cafes, walks, workshops run by neighbours — that you are not stuck for something to do. Homestays sit in the same building as the studio, so a solo traveller has people around without having to organise it.

Where is Mita Pottery Studio in Rakkar?

First Floor, Ghoomakkad New Building, Rakkar Road, Rakkar, HP 176057 — in the Kangra Valley near Dharamshala, with views toward the Dhauladhar range.

How far is Rakkar from Dharamshala town and McLeod Ganj?

Rakkar is about 7 km from Dharamshala town (about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi) and about 13 km from McLeod Ganj (about 40 to 45 minutes by taxi down through town). Gaggal Airport is approximately 15 km (30 minutes) away.

What makes Rakkar different from Dharamkot or McLeod Ganj?

Dharamkot and McLeod Ganj sit high on the ridge with market streets, trailheads and most of the valley’s foot traffic. Rakkar is a Gaddi village near Sidhbari on the quieter side — terrace fields, slate roofs, and a road with five or six cafes on it. The difference is not that Rakkar has less; it is that Rakkar has the same things without the crowd. Norbulingka and Gyuto are a few minutes away, and McLeod Ganj is a 40-minute taxi if you still want the bazaar.

Can I visit Rakkar as a day trip from McLeod Ganj?

Yes. Many visitors spend a morning in McLeod Ganj, take a 40-minute taxi down to Rakkar for a two-hour pottery workshop and a visit to Norbulingka, and head up to Naddi for sunset.

Can I book a pottery session at the Rakkar studio?

Yes. Browse weekend workshop slots online or WhatsApp the studio. Beginners, families (ages 5+), and travellers are welcome.
